As for my piece, I was a bit shy on the idea side. I've been spending a great deal of creative energy writing new lessons this year and Farktography and just haven't been spending much on photoshopping. So, I pulled out the Wacom and just tried to repaint the thing. Every pixel is new, and the few non-"paint" pixels are still PS-brushes I've acquired that seemed to work.

This took a bit longer than anticipated due to somebody's real life responsibilities getting in the way. In part, mine, because I didn't harass the 8th participant until last night. As soon as I did, they came through.

Greta job everyone... I hope we all do well in the Tourney coming up. Look for another collaboration in December (Christmas Break)... I'll probably put out a call for volunteers around Thanksgiving time so there will be plenty of time to get ready.

Now to polish a few skills for MMT IV!

I've started a blog here: http://rubaiyatonline.blogspot.com/ where I will be posting the entire text of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam (the Fitzgerald translation which is public domain). I'd like to throw open the doors to anyone who wants to illustrate any of the quatrains to please just post the quatrain and image in this thread, and I'll move it over to the blog.

It's a little late tonight for me to get the blog any further along, but I just got it set up and wanted to at least tease the idea.

The inspiration for this came from the fact that somehow I've become some sort of collector of illustrated editions by total accident. I've got a couple nice ones (one's supposedly worth $120... I got it for $12) but thought my buddies and folk here could do at least as nice a job.

Illustrations do not have to have a direct relationship to the text. If you're inspired to go off on a tangent, but were inspired by a quatrain... terrific! Also, straight-up photos will be accepted as well, as long as they were taken by you and you feel strongly that it fits the quatrain.

Hopefully I'll have it a little more underway tomorrow.

EDIT: Second edit: Feel free to peruse the poem and post your quatrain and image to this thread. I'll be uploading each quatrain as its own post and putting them in order. Therefore, if you want an image to show up soon, do a low number quatrain. If there's a specific one you want to do, post it here (with the number) and I'll insert it when I get to that one (shouldn't take me more than a week to get it all up, but life can get in the way).

To that end, I decided, while waiting for the site redeisgn, that something simple and open-ended would be in order.

Anyone at any time with a yen to try their hand can compose a haiku (or swipe one, but please attribute) and either craft an image in the image manipulation program of their choice, or supply a photograph they have taken that works with their image.

If I remember properly (and GbyP can edit this if I've erred) dimensions should not exceed
60x60 px. They also should be as lightweight as possible.

Well, my idea is pretty simple. We'll take an image, manipulate it any way you want, and then I'll collect the images and make a big Warhol-type image from our art.

You may do way more to your block than just re-color, but recolor if that's what you want. Initially, try to keep your contribution to a single block, so this becomes an equal partnership for all. If participation is light, then maybe we ask then-current contributors to make a second if they want.

Given my upcoming schedule we've got like a month before I can commit to being able to assemble to contributions. (August 20-something) This does mean that no one has any excuse for not having the time to turn in a block. Except for maybe el chode... he's got a wedding coming up in a couple months...

So... given the name of the site, the first image will be this fine little squirrel I found and tweaked into his current greyscale boring state:



For the purposes of organization and convenience, submit your blocks below in this thread, and I'll work with GbyP to make the album in the gallery.

Feel free to sign your block if you want.

Do know that when I put this together the blocks will shrink to probably 200x200 or 300x300, so too fine detail work may get lost in the overall image (but will show up in your personal block when I post it full-size in the gallery sub-thread)]]> HERE. I tried to paint this one the way I did the last one, but that just wasn't working for me, so I searched for applicable textures and replaced shapes with those. Then I desaturated the original image and overlaid it, mostly so we could see the face on the woman in red. I also had some fun looking up the book covers.

Fifi's is interesting, and hopefully she'll share what she did.

This one doesn't quite "hang together" the same way the last one did... but it's got a lot more personality. I like 'em both in their own ways... kinda like choosing between which kid you like more...

BTW - I'm outta here starting next Saturday for like 9 days... if it rains I might find a library and try to catch up, otherwise, it's 9 days of canoeing, hiking, biking, camping and just generally enjoying all that the Adirondacks have to offer...

This went remarkably smoothly. libranoelrose had to beg off for undisclosed personal reasons. dsclink stepped right up and took over the assigned block admirably.

This has been my first major photoshop project in weeks, and it was tremendously rewarding. I'm definitely thinking we should do this again. I'm going to keep my eyes out for a perfect image for June. Keep your eyes peeled for details!]]>

As you can see the artists recreated one of VanGogh's images in 9 squares and then put them together into one image again. Each region is distinct, but is a part of a recognizable whole.

I thought it would be neat to have a group of us each do one quadrant (sextrant?, octrant? nontrant?) of a famous image in our own way, and then reconstruct it here.

Feel free to reply to this thread, and if enough are interested, I'll begin actual co-ordination. Target time to begin working on this is approximately 1 week from today.]]>
