Open Challenge: Remove the model
I am dying for something to chop right now. The Q looks unappealing to me. My last two entries at PSC did well, but there is nothing there for me either so here is a challenge to others looking to chop.
Remove all the parts of the model where her skin is showing. You can either make the skin transparent or delete her completely (clothes must stay). Bonus points for keeping the hair. ![]() Supdog and Andy Iceprey are the masters at this skill so hopefully that can chime in with some advice for those willing to try for the first time. electronchaser@misfitsquirrels.com |

Re: Open Challenge: Remove the model
I've always wondered how these were done. I wonder how the 'content aware' feature will work with this type of thing in CS5. Will it put what's behind the model in place of the skin, or will it try to integrate the dress into the wall?
I'm gonna give it a shot, thanks for this EC! |

libranoelrose Wrote:I wonder how the 'content aware' feature will work with this type of thing in CS5. Will it put what's behind the model in place of the skin, or will it try to integrate the dress into the wall? From what I got out of the launch demo and the demos added since... (Keep in mind that I'm still skeptical about all of these features)
1. Select the model and copy her to a new layer. From what they showed, the selection should only take a few minutes. You just use what looks like the quick selection tool then refine the edges. 2. Back to the main layer.
a) Re-select the woman (you remembered to save the selection, right?) b) Re-select the woman using a sloppy selection like the polygonal lasso tool[/list:u] 3. Fill (or delete?) your selection. If it works as advertised, you've now got a clean background to work with. 4. Back to model's layer. Mask out her skin. If you've masked her properly, the (now clean) background shows where there was skin. 5. Create a layer to fill in the stuff that is wrong. This is probably the most difficult part because it requires that you see or imagine what isn't there. For example, you should be able to see the insole of her shoe and it is not the tree behind her face if her hair is visible. 6. Make finishing touches such as adjusting lighting, applying shadows, etc.. [/list:u] A word of explanation about steps 2 and 3 - In one example, they selected the subject to be erased and then filled it using using Content Aware Fill (CAF?) In another example (using the same subject) they simply did a sloppy selection around the subject and just deleted him. In both cases, the CAF filled in the background. Different methods for the same results? One is better/more accurate than the other? Changes during development? I have no idea but I'm looking forward to finding out. :-) |

libranoelrose Wrote:Awesome breakdown Laz! I just like any challenge that will help me improve my skill set. And I must say your left sleave was very well done. The whole image was but I know how hard that part was and I can see how well you did it. electronchaser@misfitsquirrels.com |

Re: Open Challenge: Remove the model
Oh course, I am the only one that left the nose ring....or the thumb ring for that matter.

Re: Open Challenge: Remove the model
Thanks for the compliment EC!
I didn't even notice the nose ring, or thumb ring. I was actually gonna ask you what those white pixels in her hair were... Excellent attention to detail! |

Re: Open Challenge: Remove the model
![]() First attempt at this. gave up. good job libranoel and EC! I just didn't have the patience any more... I'm ok with the missing areas but the plaid and refilling the backside of the clothes uhhh nope... maybe a different outfit I could do better on. Thanks for the contest! |

Re: Open Challenge: Remove the model
Thanks VD!
I struggled mightily while replacing the plaid. I tried about 6 different techniques before I was able to make it look half way decent. And yes these do appear to be a labor of patience... |
